So what exactly is a REC?

A REC is a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)which is an electronic, tradeable commodity equal to 1 Megawatt hour of renewable energy generation. A REC is similar to a share certificate as it represents a unit of value and may be traded for financial return

  • The value of a REC varies over time depending on the market situation. In 2009 the REC price has varied between $50 and $35.
  • The number of RECs generated depends on the size of the solar power system and the installation location. Homeowners and businesses with solar power installations in NSW, QLD, NT, WA, SA and ACT can claim 20.6 RECs for each KW installed. In Victoria and Tasmania homeowners and businesses can claim 17.6 RECs per KW installed.
  • The new Solar Credit Scheme now offers 5 times the RECs for solar power systems of up to 1.5KW which provides 155 RECS in most parts of Australia and 133 RECs in Victoria and Tasmania.

Be aware of the fine print! When the Government announced the new Solar Credits Scheme it was with the expectation of a REC price at $50. This is presented in the relevant Government publications and media releases.

However by mid July 2009 RECs traded at only $35 to $38.

Several companies now offer special deals under the new Solar Credit Scheme on the basis of a theoretical RECs value at $50 which can be misleading. For example if the offer for a 1.5KW System is $3,000 after RECs and based on $50 per REC then the real costs to the customer is $5,325 at a REC value of $35.
